Are you struggling with procrastination and feeling stuck in old habits? You’re not alone. Many people procrastinate because of fear and feelings of unworthiness. That inner voice may be saying things like “Who are you to do this? Who are you to lose weight, get that job, or start that project?” This voice aims to protect you from disappointment, but it actually keeps you stuck.

The secret to ending procrastination is to release attachment to the outcome. What if your only goal was to have some fun? By focusing on enjoying the process rather than fixating on results, it becomes much easier to take action on whatever you’ve been avoiding.

The good news? I have five effective methods to overcome procrastination and start taking action towards achieving your dreams. Tune in to the “Dear Gabby” podcast to discover these five methods and start taking action today!

Here are some tips to overcome procrastination and infuse more joy into your pursuits:

  • Find the fun. Whether it’s going to the gym, eating healthy, or starting a new project – look for ways to make it enjoyable. Bring a spirit of playfulness and curiosity to everything you do!
  • Take small right actions. Don’t pressure yourself to do everything at once. Break your goal down into tiny, manageable steps. Ask yourself, “What is one small thing I can do today to move forward?” Those small actions will add up to big changes over time.
  • Let go of judgment. If you’re procrastinating due to a challenging situation, like a strained relationship, make sure you deal with it from a place of love and compassion. Release judgment and express yourself with genuine appreciation. The other person may or may not be receptive, but at least you’ll be taking care of yourself.
  • Make self-care non-negotiable. It’s crucial to prioritize activities that bring you joy and replenish your energy, especially if you spend a lot of time working and caring for others. Commit to doing one pleasurable, restorative thing for yourself each day, even if it’s as simple as a walk outside.
  • Tap into gratitude. Appreciating the good in your life raises your vibration and makes it easier to take positive action. Start and end each day by noting a few things you’re thankful for.

Remember, you have the power to create the life you desire. By choosing to act from a place of joy and releasing attachment to outcomes, you’ll build unstoppable momentum.

Take a moment now to identify one small step you can take towards a goal you’ve been procrastinating on. Then schedule it into your day and follow through. Notice how good it feels to invest in yourself and your dreams! With repeated practice, you’ll develop new habits that serve and fulfill you. You are so worthy of living with purpose and joy. Claim it now by taking aligned action, one baby step at a time.

Dear Gabby, I feel stuck. Dear Gabby, I keep procrastinating. Dear Gabby, I have this big dream, but I'm not taking an action on it. And here I am today to teach you how to get done people, the spiritual steps that you can take to get it done, to take that action on your dream. One of the things I tell my son, Ollie, is I always say, It's just the first step.

So if he's nervous about going to soccer and he wants to say, I'm not going to go, I'm not going to go, I'm not going to do it. So we'll just get out of the car. And when we take that one first step, the action begins. That small step can just begin the practice of action. We're going to address this big time today.

We're going to go deep into how we procrastinate, why we procrastinate, and how we can start to take action with a [00:02:00] lot more fun and less pressure. So if you're somebody who's got a big dream or you want to just show up differently in your life, listen to this episode all the way through to the end. And if you want some more coaching from me, I am just so proud to be able to be your coach in your pocket anytime.

All right, we're here in the studio, very professional today. So who out there feels like they are procrastinating something? This is our moment to really create change in our life.

And if you are procrastinating, it's likely that there are parts of you that are a little nervous because you don't want to disappoint yourself. Don't want to miss the opportunity. the opportunity to really show up and see what you can create and what is possible. Often we procrastinate because there's a part of us that is saying silently or loudly, who are you to do this?

Who are you to lose that weight? Who are you to get that job? Who are you to start that project? Who are you to think outside the box? [00:04:00] Who are you to go on that dating app? And so the voice of fear and the voice of unworthiness is the loudest voice often. It's the first voice we hear often. And it keeps us stuck in procrastination.

It keeps us stuck in old habits. It keeps us stuck in ways that we may or may not want to be stuck in, but we stay there because. That voice is protecting us falsely from the feeling of being disappointed. But you've heard me say this over and over again, the secret to taking an action in life is to Release the outcome.

And so I think one of the secrets to stop procrastinating to end procrastination is to set yourself free from the outcome. What if the only goal was to have some fun? That's what we talk about here. What if your only goal was to have some fun? [00:05:00] Wouldn't it be a lot easier to take action on whatever it is you've been procrastinating because you're no longer going to hold onto that fear that What happens if it doesn't work?

Because the only goal is to have some fun. What if the only intention is to show up and have some fun? Okay, well, you could bring that to anything. You could bring that to going to the gym. You could bring that to eating a healthier meal because you could have some fun cooking it. You could bring that to starting a new project or a new endeavor.

I know in my life, I'm not much of a procrastinator, but usually the things I procrastinate most are the things that I one, think won't be fun, or two, I'm feeling unworthy of being able to show up for it. And so I have to seek the fun. I have to find the joy in it. I have to really give myself the, the Gabby personal kick in the ass to say, Let's just have a little bit of fun here.

Let's take the pressure off. Let's just get into the joy of it all. I also really believe [00:06:00] that really taking the pressure off of having to do everything at once, you heard me say this again and again, small right actions towards a goal. And when we take those small right actions, we begin to let them add up and they add up to miraculous change.

So ask yourself right now, what is one small thing that I can do today to take a step forward in whatever it is that you've been procrastinating? And just tell me what is one small thing that you could do today to take yourself one step forward in what you've been procrastinating? Asking yourself right now, what is one small thing, one small action you can take today to stop procrastinating, to give yourself permission to do something different?

And to take action with joy and make sure that that one small thing is something that you find fun. So, for instance, if you're wanting to write a book, but you just feel like you're staring at the computer screen, what is the one action you can take today [00:07:00] that could be a fun action that could contribute to the book?

So, for instance, maybe it's just daydreaming for 15 minutes about the stories you want to write, or maybe it's writing a free writing exercise, just letting it out. So, without trying so hard. That one small action puts you into the momentum and the forward motion of what that big desire is. And when you add up those small right actions, you stop procrastinating and you start creating.

So that's my intro for today. I'm going to bring on my guests. Who is first on the show? Hello, miss. How you doing? Hi, Gabby. Where are you in the world? I'm in Washington State. Right on. Very cool. So out here in the PNW, I'm like, my whole body is like shaking. Shake it out. Shake it out. Yeah, so I've been watching Dear Gabby for a year.

And I've, I, it was funny because today I was like, [00:08:00] I hope it's not me today because I don't know. I don't, I used to have so many problems and now they're better. Because you've been listening to your guy for so long that you have no problems anymore. So you have nothing. Exactly. Yeah. You just led me to, uh, that is what I want to hear girl.

So yeah, anything up for you around the topic of procrastination or just anything that's coming up? I guess the one thing that I would ask you about in regards to procrastination is kind of some in law drama that I'm experiencing. So it's my, it's obviously, it's my husband's parents and we kind of have never gotten along super well and it kind of came to a little bit of a head during our vacation this year.

And we've kind of been like having, I guess the kind of the main issue with them is that they don't communicate about things and it's swept under the rug, which is not the way that I have ever dealt with things, particularly in the last year since I, I started listening.

It's funny, actually, I started listening to super attractor and then I decided to quit my nine to five job. [00:09:00] I'm a photographer. And so I decided to really just like put my whole heart into that. And I started doing that. It's gone really well over the last It's like I was able to quit all my other jobs and do that full time.

And so I'm in a place where I feel like really like vibey and I think like things are good and energy is good. And I want to be in a place where I feel really kind of like calmness throughout all of the relationships in my life. But it's definitely like this one little sort of like kink in your neck that you can't sort of like massage out.
So you have in laws that don't want to address feelings or issues. And you do. Yes. So, do it. Stop procrastinating. Here's the deal, when you meet someone from a place that is self energy, a place that is a heart full of love, a heart free of judgment, a place that is just in gratitude and [00:10:00] appreciation for the other.

You can say anything and it doesn't matter how they respond. What matters is that you took care of yourself. So do not speak up about whatever you want to express or just deal with or whatever is up unless you are in that energy of genuine compassion, appreciation, gratitude, and love. When you're in that energy, when you're in that state, you're primed to even have a molecule of penetration in the conversation.

So don't think, oh, just because they don't want to deal with things that I shouldn't. Just say what you need to say. Say what you need to say. Say what you need to say. Say what you need to say with love. They may or may not respond. They may just completely, you know, gaslight you or blow you off. And [00:11:00] that's okay, but at least you took care of yourself.

At least you know that you've spoken for yourself. And I would do this sooner than later because it's bringing down the vibe for you. Right. And it's going to be very valuable to just speak your truth. As long as you say it without judgment and with just genuine love, it will be received with love. It may not get through.

It may not. They just may be that unconscious. It may not get through. But you'll feel like you've taken an action towards supporting yourself. That's it. I think the hardest part for me is approaching my mother in law without judgment. So like I've known her for 10 years and of course I love her, but there's always, I mean, I, it's, it's really hard for me to separate, I think my feelings from like any kind of conversation.

Have you read Judgment Detox? Yeah. Read it again. And do not approach her until you have applied this book, Judgment Detox, the six steps [00:12:00] to freeing yourself from judgment. Do not approach her until you've applied the six steps to her. There's your homework. That book will heal. Yeah. It's intense. It's a hard book.

Yeah. Yeah. And I listen to it. That's a book you want the physical copy. You want both. You want to listen so you can just take it in. Then you want to go sit down with the physical copy and do the work. That is a book where you want to do the work. There's your homework. She's writing it down. She's a real good student.

All right, my love. That is it. I'm done with you. I feel very freaking complete. Cool! I feel, I feel pleased that I finally, I'm still like, I'm gonna, I'm like gonna call all my friends and my mom and tell them, I was on Dear Gabby today! I was on Dear Gabby. Oh yes, Gabby, I love you. Bye sweetheart, thank you.

All right, who is next? Who do we have next? Hi, Samita. Where are you sweetheart? I'm from India. I have so many people from India coming on the show. It is so freaking cool How are you sweetheart? You know, you guys stay up for this stuff. Okay, cool. So Samita, how are you? What can I do to help you? Well, I just wanted to ask you a [00:18:00] few things like you're talking about procrastination right now So I am basically, I'm a dentist and I have done my speciality, uh, like masters in dentistry.

So I have always been like, since my childhood, I was like, I need to get my grades. I need to get a seat in a, you know, in a college and all. But now when I am here, I really want to enjoy my life. But I'm still, you know, on to something like to get a job or to get this kind of salary. So I am basically procrastinating my own or maybe you can say my enjoyment.

Okay, what's one thing you can do tomorrow when you wake up? That would be joyful. Maybe a yoga class, yoga practice. Would you be able to do that? Do you have the time to do that? Can you make that space? Actually, I have been, you know, I have been procrastinating that too. Can you make that commitment to me that you'll go to that yoga class tomorrow?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah? [00:19:00] Will you send me a picture of yourself on the mat? Yeah, sure. And direct message me with that picture of yourself on the mat. Yes. All right. I believe you. I think you're going to do it. Now that I've put you on the hook to do it, Samita. Okay. I'm sure I will do it for sure. But what about making that promise to yourself every day doing one small thing that brings you joy?

You can't create joy in your life unless you lean into it. And that joy is always available to us. It's good. And it doesn't have to be hours at the park or anything like that. It can be something very simple. It can be something as simple as yesterday I walked for 12, 000 steps with my friend throughout the city.

It wasn't some major thing, but it was just, just filled my heart. It filled me up with connection and that was something I was really deeply missing. So I had to take action. I wasn't going to just sit at home and just, you know, do more work. I said, no, get off your ass and go for that walk. So that you can feel that connection.

And so you have to take the action to [00:20:00] make sure that you stay out of that energy of procrastination and you build up the momentum of that new behavior. So go to the yoga class tomorrow and then go the next day and then go the next day and then go the next day and go the next day and maybe even commit to 30 days.

Yeah, sure. You got me? Make that commitment to yourself. Yeah, I did. I did. I did. All of you doctors out there need some self care. Thank you so much. You spend a lot of time working and helping and serving others. You need to make sure you're serving yourself. Okay, Samita? Yeah, for sure. Enjoy that yoga class, baby.Go, girl. Okay. Bye. Hello. Hi. Where are you? I'm in my dressing gown. You're in your dressing gown. Where are you? England? England? Yes, I'm in England. That's why it's so dark there.

Oh girlfriend. What's going down? Oh my god, Gabby. I can't believe this. This is the first time I've joined the zoom because of the time zones [00:21:00] But i've listened to every episode of dear Gabby and last week I started listening to the universe has your back great beautiful and this really means a lot to me because I lost my cousin.

She took her own life last Monday and for some reason you really remind me of her. Like you have the same kind of look in your eyes. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm so sorry for her. Yeah. She must have been really suffering. Yeah, it's been a hard week. Yeah. Oh my gosh, I'm shaking. Maybe she brought you here today.

I believe it. She's part of my American family as well. How can I support you today, Tallulah? Okay, so I hadn't even thought about a question if I'm honest, but for a long time I've been struggling with anorexia and I've really committed to doing a lot of inner work this past year and connecting with my spirituality and [00:22:00] inner child work and shadow work and I feel like I'm getting to the root of the cause of it but I'm really struggling to actually let behaviors and I feel like I'm procrastinating looking after myself in that way.

And becoming healthy again and doing what I know I need to do. Beautiful. I'm just deeply grateful for you being vulnerable and speaking up and speaking about such a difficult topic. Anorexia like any eating disorder or any other form of addiction is really an addiction because it's doing something repeatedly to get out of your body, to get out of your mind, https: otter.ai

That you said you're doing the child, inner child work and you're starting to look at those parts of yourself. And it's not uncommon that the addictive parts or the anorexic parts could start to really get kicked up as you get closer [00:23:00] to the core wound. It's not uncommon, sweetheart. So I want you to just be very loving and caring and kind to yourself and just say thank you to the part of you that's been doing these behaviors and befriend that part of you.

It's been a form of protection for some time, but just recognize it whenever you can, and see if it can step aside temporarily. See if in the moment you could say, maybe just for this moment we can have a meal. Maybe you can step aside for today, or for this moment, for this 10 minutes.

You are touching into deep things, And our coping mechanisms will really kick up. So just that awareness and that witnessing of the protector part of the anorexic part that's just showing up to protect you with air quotes, right? [00:24:00] Seemingly protect you is showing up because there's a lot coming up. So forgive yourself.

And the small thing that you can do to get out of the procrastination of, of avoiding the abstinence, right? So it's really about avoiding the abstinence from the behavior. So in your case, it's making sure you eat rather than not eat, correct? One small thing you can do is just each day for at least one moment, notice when that anorexic part shows up and just ask her what she needs.

Just say, what do you need right now? And listen to her. That's powerful. One small thing. And then lots of big things that you're doing, which you're not in any form procrastinating, which is doing that deeper work. It's nothing short of miraculous to be able to have the bravery to go to those places. And your willingness and your bravery to go there is what's going to heal you.

But be patient with yourself. And that's it. Honor yourself for all that's coming up and the ways that you may show up for it. Okay, my love. Thank [00:25:00] you so, so much. You're so beautiful and wonderful and I just want you to know that you're doing everything right. I feel like this moment is so significant to me, I can't even tell you.

Maybe today is the turning point. Why not? Let today be the turning point. Today, anyone that's listening to this right now, today can be the turning point. Stop procrastinating and start taking small actions towards your desired change. Thank you, Gabby. Thank you so much. You're welcome, sweetheart. Sleep well tonight.

All right. Who's next? Hi. Hi. Oh my gosh. One, I feel, this is one day that I don't get ready. That's how I like you, Ginger. I like when you guys are just like in your sweatpants and all messed up and coming out of the bathroom. So hello. How are you doing, sister? So happy to be here. Thank you. Thank you.

That's so weird. I felt like you were going to call me next. It's a common thing. It's a common thing. I don't know. This is [00:26:00] just so crazy. It's not uncommon. What's your dear Gabby today? So it's interesting because I guess on the topic of procrastination, I actually should be dressed and out in my car and doing my job.

And pulling doors and being in front of people. And I am having the hardest time physically getting out of my car and walking in and cold calling on people. And I don't know what's holding me back from it. I mean, I'm, I'm selling commercial water, so it's not like there's a lot to it. I. I don't know why I can't get in and go in front of these people and ask them, you know, who they're using for water.

And I, this is my job. This is my new job of two months and I hide behind my computer and I, I cannot get out of my car and I don't know what is holding me back. I have an idea for you. Here we go. Ginger. Remember I said earlier [00:27:00] that sometimes the outcome of the situation is the focus, but what if the outcome was just to have some fun?

So rather than going to work thinking, Oh, I got to make X number of phone calls and land X number of deals and whatnot. What if your goal was to just connect to people and just have a good time connecting to people? I've had so many encounters with people that are telemarketers or people calling to sell something to me.

Where I can just hear the just sort of disappointment in the back of their voice, just, you know, they're reading from a script. They're so miserable. And then I've had those chance encounters where I meet someone who their energy on the other end is like, Hey, what's up? This is so and so. I wanted to just talk to you about your water.

I have this really cool idea. And I actually keep talking because I want to connect to that person. I want you to make it a game. How can I have fun connecting to humans today? And let's be real, sister, there's plenty of [00:28:00] people sitting at home hiding out that don't want to, you know, be out in the world and they're starving for connection.

So what if you could be that connection today? What if you could be that God shot of love for them today, where they just hear the voice of another human on the other line who actually cares about them wanting to hear how they are? Whenever I call to change anything on my credit card or whatever, I'm always like, you know, I use language like, Hey, sweetheart, how are you?

And people don't even often respond because they don't expect me to ask them how they are. Show up with that vibration. I walk around the streets and I'm just like, hi, gorgeous. Hi, sweetheart. I just want to make people feel good because it makes me feel so good to be in their presence when they feel good.

You can have a great day today. Go put your clothes on, get in your fucking car and go make some people feel good. That's your job. You're a light worker. You're not selling your. Sharing, you're expressing love. [00:29:00] Go to work. That's awesome. Thank you. Will you get out of your ass and go to work right now? Yes, I will.

Go, Ginger! Go! After I listen to the rest of this. Listen to this and then send me a picture, DM me a picture, and I want you all to be accountable of yourself at work, doing your job, which is to be a light worker, sending some love. That's awesome. I love people. That's what I'm talking about. You'll feel so fulfilled, my love.

You will feel so fulfilled. And I can see that in your eyes and there's tears in your eyes and it's lighting up when I say this. You have work to do. You are a light worker. Go bring light with you wherever you go. Get your ass over to work.

Yo, what's going on girl? Hi. Hi, baby. Where are you in the world? I am in Victoria, BC. I love Victoria. I have had many a talk in Victoria. A beautiful theater there that I've given talks at. Maybe it's just the Victoria Theater. It's, I don't know, but it's such a beautiful place to be. My goodness. It is. My heart and my soul are so happy here.

I'm originally from Northern British Columbia where it's cold, long winter. So. I'm still cold at Victoria, but you know, not so bad. All right, good. I'm happy that you're happy. How can I support you, my love? Okay, first of all, I jump on these shows just sporadically every once in a while, and procrastination is the thing that I've been dealing with.

I've been in the six month program [00:34:00] to be a breathwork, a trauma informed breathwork facilitator. And out of all of the courses and education and everything, this one lands so deeply within my heart and soul with how I'm going to help people, help my community. And so I have about a month left and 24 more practicum hours and workshops to do.

And the last three weeks, I just haven't done anything. And so I really trust in my bones that I'm going to get it done, but life has gotten in the way. So I'm learning, I guess my question is how do we compartmentalize the crazy life things that we're doing? me potentially having to move out of my home, finding a new place to live.

I don't even know if I'm going to be able to find a place to live in Victoria because the rental crisis is huge and you know, I'm trying [00:35:00] to find places that are in my budget. And so feeling like I have to address that, but also I don't want to just keep falling into this procrastination pit because it would be so easy to focus on these bigger things.

Is it possible that Because you're nearing the end of the training that you might be procrastinating now. Definitely. Oh, that's yeah. That's, and this is my pattern too. When I watch something so bad. I find a reason to not do it because it's scary on the other side. It, it involves me showing up and you know, I have done the inner child work and the shadow work.

I've dove so deep in that. What got me onto starting my own breathwork practice is working with a therapist doing EMDR and just seeing incredible results with that. So that was, that's how I want to help. So there's a part of you that doesn't feel worthy. of completion. There's a part of you that doesn't feel worthy of bringing this out in your [00:36:00] own unique way.

And so you're going to find all the apartment and the bad market and all the different storylines to be an excuse to procrastinate and not fulfill this dream. So we're dealing, like I said very early in the show, I said one of the biggest reasons we procrastinate is because we don't think we are worthy of fulfilling that dream desire.

So the worthiness work is big work. It is therapeutic work. It's, it's clear that there's, okay, there's a little bit more showing up here, a little bit more to be revealed, a little bit more therapy, whatever it is. That's beautiful. Let's be grateful for that. But to get yourself back into the presence of worthiness, remember that as long as you're having a good time in the class, Then you're fulfilling your function.

As long as you're feeling inspired, you are fulfilling your function. As long as you are feeling connected to the work, you're fulfilling your function. The irony is that the sooner you get back into the work and feel that connection, the sooner the other things will begin to work out in your life because you'll be back in that source [00:37:00] energy of joy and inspiration.

And that's the energy of a super attractor. That's the energy that will manifest the new apartment. So stop focusing on the lack of the apartment and start focusing on the abundance of the training and Your life will be turned upside down in a good way mark my words. I love that the joy I think the joy just go get back into the joy of it When I'm in a training, I'm always like guinea pigging, you know, I'm just like teaching people what I'm doing.

I just go teach your friends what you're doing. Try it out with them. Like, just have fun and enjoy, you know, have a good time left to the finish line. Right. Not to get there first. You just got to get there by having a good time. And if you just make that your focus right now, how much fun can I have while I'm doing this?

Then the apartment will work itself out. But most importantly, you'll take the pressure off of feeling unworthy because if your only goal is to have a good time and to be enjoy. Then you don't have to feel like you have to be worthy of anything. I feel that. [00:38:00] And I don't want you to ignore the part of you that feels unworthy.

There's work to do there, but that's a separate conversation. That's therapy. That's doing a little bit more EMDR, whatever it is. That's okay. That's great. We all got more work to do. Mm hmm. Go have fun, sister. What's one thing you can do today to have some fun with your schoolwork? Dance. Is that part of the schoolwork?

No. Okay, you can dance and then what can you do to have some fun with your schoolwork? I can build a workshop around joy and having fun and invite people in into that while incorporating breathwork into that. Go do it. It's done. Okay, have fun. Go have fun. Thank you. You're welcome, my love. You're welcome so much.

I love you. I love you. What a good show, guys. What a nice conversation. There's so much up for people around this topic. And when we are procrastinating, we're procrastinating because we're protecting ourselves. Procrastination is a protector part. It's a way of saying, [00:39:00] well, I'm just going to avoid that.

So I don't have to deal with that bigger feeling of regret, or I don't have to deal with that feeling of unworthiness, but we miss the miracle when we deny ourselves. the chance to take the actions towards the bigger desire. So take the pressure off, make it about having a good time, make it about connection to others, make it about small actions towards a bigger desire, and keep it simple.

Don't pile it on, just keep it simple. Everything that's done with joy will always be a success. So there's no pressure here, and in effect, no reason to procrastinate, because if the joy is the point of success, Then how could you feel unworthy? How could you possibly be unworthy? How could you fail? I want everybody to post on your social media today one small thing you're going to do towards the joy of whatever it is that you've been [00:40:00] procrastinating.

Post it on your social media, make a commitment to others, say it out loud, tell a friend, commit, and then commit to the next 40 days to doing one small thing that's fun. It's in the pursuit of what you've been procrastinating. Make that commitment now. Stick to the 40 days. Let me know in your reviews of Dear Gabby how it goes.
