what to do when life gets hard: spiritual guidance for tough times

[00:00:00] The following podcast is a dear media production.

Hey there. Welcome to Dear Gabby. I'm your host Gabby Bernstein, and if you landed here, it is absolutely no accident. It means that you're ready to feel good and manifest a life beyond your wildest dreams. Let's get started.

Welcome back my friend. Welcome back to Dear Gabby. Today's episode is really about what happens when life gets hard and how we can find inner strength and tap into that unwavering faith when we're going through difficult times. And you know, there's so much happening in the world right now and so many of us are feeling very lost.

I think a lot of us are feeling quite overwhelmed raising my own hands and raising both hands. And today's episode is really about developing resilience, spiritual resilience, even in the face of adversity. And so what I'm [00:01:00] doing is I'm sharing one of my most cherished live talks. It's a talk I gave earlier this year in Los Angeles, and it was right after the devastating fires in LA.

My talk was scheduled to be the week of the fires, and of course we canceled, and a few weeks later we came out and I gave this talk on stage. Oh my God. This just. Opened my heart and it cracked open the audience. I actually was with a friend of mine yesterday who was live in the audience and she was like, there was magic in that room.

Gabby just magic in that room. And so I'm really thrilled to be able to share this with you right now because no matter what you are going through, or no matter how much uncertainty you might be feeling or faced with at this moment, this talk is gonna remind you that you can transform that faith into love.

And it's gonna be a reminder that you can emerge from any difficult experience with resilience and connection and inner power. And this is just such spiritual guidance that's gonna come through this, and really [00:02:00] actionable tools as well. But I want you to really know that this message is coming to you.

Right here, right now, and there's even more support available to you right now. I've just rereleased my 10th edition, my 10th anniversary edition of my most beloved book. The Universe has Your Back Transform Fear into Faith, and this book has healed so many souls over a million copies throughout the world.

And I'm just realizing that this book is more timely right here, right now than. Ever. And that's why we decided to re-release it with a new introduction, a new cover. And when I was writing this book, so much shifted inside of me. I was sitting in my whitewashed office and it was like white ceilings, white floors, and this tiny wooden desk.

And I felt this energy of love just flowing through me. Um, I just felt filled with hope and faith as I wrote it, and this book was my lifeline. It was reminding me that it was the universe that I needed [00:03:00] most, and I know that that's why it's had such resonance with so many people. So this is your sign, guys.

Go pick up your copy of the Universe Has your back at dear gabby.com/universe book, or go to Amazon or Barnes and Noble or wherever you get your books. And if you're a Gabby coaching member, I've recorded new meditations that go with the book. So you can go into your discover section to your meditations, just type in the universe has your back book, and you're gonna see eight new meditations in your app that are gonna be all for this book.

And if you're not a member yet, you can go try seven days free@deargabby.com. Slash app. If you're not a member of the Gabby coaching app, get your butt in there. It is epic dear gabby.com/app. Okay, so let's dive into this week's episode and find that inner strength and that unwavering faith even in their toughest moments.

Enjoy the show.

Hello, my most committed audience ever for coming out in Biblical Reign.[00:04:00]  I am already proud of you. How are you doing?

How are you really doing? Yeah, how are you really doing?

You feeling? Feeling okay? Yeah. Feeling good tonight. Yeah, ready for some miracles this evening.
I'm so glad that I'm here now. As you know, I was supposed to be here during the fires, and I'm so glad that it's now that it's right here, right now in your presence in this space, holding this energy in this moment in time where the energy starts to shift. Where the resilience starts to sneak in, where the [00:05:00] opportunity for a new way of being and the door begins to open.

When we go through difficult times, it's often horrific in these moments. But then we have this opportunity, these moments where these invisible doors open for us and we can say yes to something new. And it is my hope and it is my prayer, and it is my intention that tonight is a night of resilience. That tonight is a night of hope, that tonight is a night of opportunity, that tonight is a night of shifting, that this is an evening for you to come out new. Yesterday I gave a talk in Mexico.

I gave the best Spanglish talk ever. It was so epic. I got on the stage and I had my outline, and as some of you have may have seen before, I [00:06:00] take my outline and I just like to just throw it in the audience. I'm like, whatever. I don't need this. Because the second that I stepped out on that stage, I just felt this insane energy in the room.

Everybody's vibration was so high. I love Mexican people. Do I have Mexican friends in this room? I love you. You are my favorite people. You are my absolute favorite culture. The energy was so strong, I threw my messages into the audience. I was like, forget my outline. I don't need this. And this new energy started to move through me on the stage and it was this energy and I just continued to say as Barranza Faye Amor.

Hope, faith, love, hope, faith, love. Hope. Faith and love became the through line of this talk that just moved through me, and I believe that that message that last night's talk was almost [00:07:00] like a preparation for being with you. It was almost like the energy came through me yesterday to prepare me for the message I wanted to give you today.

The message of resilience, the message of finding that faith, no matter what, leaning into love, no matter what, and trusting that the universe has your back no matter what.

And listen, you know, we're, we're here maybe a month after one of the, the biggest trauma this city has ever experienced, and we're in the aftermath of the trauma and we're experiencing the shift of that new energy. And in this shift right now, you [00:08:00] might be thinking, okay, you know, I really am happy to be here.

I love Gabby. I love that I can get this Gabby kick in the ass tonight. But really, can I really trust the universe after everything I've been through? Yes, but there's, there's two choices that you have in these moments when the experience is so extreme. You have two choices in these moments. You have the first choice, which is to check out.

Go to your numbing tactics, go out and do your drinking and your eating, and you're overdoing and over everything, which is fine if you did do that at first, because you know what? You're in survival mode, my friends, and if you're still doing that, that's fine too. But then the second choice you have, the second choice you have is to check in.

The second choice you have is to turn inward, to awaken to that presence of your spiritual connection, to realign with a presence of energy, of Za, with that hope, that love, and that faith [00:09:00] that is inside of you, my friends. And guess what? Every single one of you made that second choice tonight. Give yourself a round of applause right now.

Give yourself a round of applause. Every single one of you made the choice. You made the right-minded choice. You made the love guided choice. You made a choice of hope and a choice of resilience, and a choice of grace, and a choice of faith in a higher power, in a better plan, in an opening, in an opportunity, in a new way of seeing the wreckage of this experience through the lens of possibility.

What can be now? Who can I be now when all of the things that keep us sort of in these lanes are dismantled, that's an opportunity. That's an opportunity to become new. And as I go through this talk tonight, I wanna guide you through that hope and that love, and that faith. Are you [00:10:00] ready?
Are you ready?

So here I have your Hope Merchant and I'm gonna give you hope. Right now it's four steps. It's four simple steps. It's four steps based on a world renowned therapy, a therapy that has studies on it, a therapy that is proven for trauma recovery and deep healing. And it is my gift and my privilege and my honor to have had the blessing of my teacher and friend, Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems Therapy, the gift that he has given me and the permission and the trust that he has put in me to write this book, to take his body of work his. 40 something years of work and make it self-help. It's a gift. It's one of the greatest gifts of my life.

And so what I've done here is I've taken this idea, this truth that he created, which is that we have these young parts of ourselves inside. One of my parts was the part that believed if I don't do it, nobody else [00:11:00] will. And these young parts of us pretty much protect us forever. They're trying to always just be an overdrive, trying to keep the feelings down.

And those parts of us block the energy of self. They block our super attractor power. They block the energy of love. They block the energy of faith inside of us. And so we walk through life almost like we're trigger happy. You know? It's like you get triggered and then you just jump to the next trigger, right?

And then you just get triggered and then you numb it out, and then you get triggered again, and you numb it out and you get triggered again. Sort of like, whoop, that doesn't feel good. I'm gonna go do something to make that feel better. And then that doesn't feel good. I'm gonna make something better.

Right. Like just in and out. In and out. Yeah. Okay. You know what I'm talking about. And so you might be thinking, well, I'm not really sure what my core belief is that I wanna work with tonight. And so I'm gonna ask you a question. What is it that you guys wanna manifest this year? Now, what is the belief that is blocking you from manifesting that desire?

Past traumas? What's the story? What's the belief? Doubt [00:12:00] It's hard. Fear overthinking. Judgment and failure. Not enough. I did everything wrong. I'll lose my freedom. How long have these beliefs been around? Years, forever. For as long as you can remember? Yeah. Sound familiar? I. These beliefs are very young.

These beliefs are stories we've carried for decades, and these beliefs deserve the love and the attention and the care that they did not get as children. And so tonight there's four steps, and I'm gonna teach you the steps and then I'm gonna give you the steps. So the first step is to just focus your attention inward, to choose to check in.

This is the four step self-help check-in choice that in any given moment we have the choice to check in instead of check out, right? So [00:13:00] instead of going to the fridge, you're going to the tv or numbing out with the drink, or numbing out with the work, or numbing out with the booze or whatever it is. We can choose to check inward.

Focus your attention inward and choose to check inside giving your inner part of you some attention. The second step is curiosity. And so asking some questions to this part of you. What do you need? What is going on? How long have you been around? How old are you? Where do you live in my body? What do you feel like?

And just checking inside. Just checking inside. And then the third question is offering up compassionate connection, asking that part of you what it needs. And the fourth step is to just witness the shift, witness the calmness. Witness the clarity. When is the creative energy buzzing through your fingertips?

Witness the courage. You can align with [00:14:00] hope and faith and love. When you know that you always have somewhere to turn. Two minutes a day, four steps, two minutes a day, four steps, two minutes a day, four steps. Check in. Check in, check in, check in.

You witness that part of yourself and you choose to focus your attention inward. The second step is you become curious about that part of yourself asking questions, where do you live in my body?

What do I know about you? What is it that you need me to know? How old are you? Are there any images or thoughts or sensations? Then you go a little further and you check in more and you become curious. What do you need? What do you need? Then you witness the shift, my friends, in two minutes, you'll feel more calm.

You'll give it breath, you'll feel more connected. You'll feel more creative, you'll feel more connected to the people [00:18:00] around you and self begets self. Guys, you know, I've been married for 12 years. I've been with my husband for 17 years, and marriage is not easy. Guys, many of us know this marriage is not easy.

For a lot of years, my husband and I, our parts, the parts, the young parts of me would trigger the young parts in him and his parts would trigger me. And it was just like this war of parts, trigger, trigger, trigger, trigger, trigger. And the patterns, you know, the patterns and the behaviors and the stories.

But we kept added, we kept healing. We kept growing. We kept opening our hearts to more and we continued to practice. My husband edited every single page of this book. My husband is my editor before it goes to the publisher, and so I spent this week in Mexico with my husband, and we had the most magical time.

It was so much love. We did not have one argument in a week, and that's a big deal for us. Not one argument, not one [00:19:00] riff. Just fun. We just had fun. Dito, we had fun. It was so,
okay. You know, I do, and I'm like butchering the words, but I got the, okay, so I'm in Mexico yesterday and I'm on the stage and it's like literally the most epic audience on the planet. Like, like I'm just looking at you like, just to bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it.

The ladies were like, Gabby, can you sing it to me? Do you know what I'm talking about? See, sing it. Sing it.

Exactly like that's how they sent me off. Like, sister Gabby, you're a Mexican. I was like, yes. I'll be back. Like, tell me when. Just send [00:20:00] me, send me the details. Okay. And God the com, okay, so I'm in Mexico. I'm having this incredible talk with these women, these amazing women. Then some men in the room too, but mainly women.

It was for that cosmic cus okay, these ladies are epic. Epic. I'm gonna be doing so much with them. And so I'm in the room and I looked at these people and I just said, I gotta tell you, this is a time for so much love in our lives.

And this woman, she raised her hand and she said, you know, Gabby, this is such a scary time. There's just, the news is so awful and we just feel so assaulted and, and there's terrible things happening in the world. And they even said, you're going to Los Angeles tomorrow. Then so many of them, by the way, send their love to you.

Cause they all knew I was coming here and they were like, send our love to Los Angeles. And many of the people in Mexico could say to me, what can we do to help them? What can we do? What can we do to help them? And so I looked at this woman and she said, what do we do? There's so much in this world right now, and there's so much chaos, [00:21:00] and there's so much fear and I don't like it.

And I said, we bring more love. Love will cast out all fear. We show up, we smile at strangers dangers. We hold the door, we give a hug. We put down our phone, we offer to be of service. We say kind words. And I looked at this audience, I said, look, you know, this is a room of privilege to be in this room in El Mexico, the people that could, so they bought their ticket.

They got to the event, they were in their awesome clothes. I said, this is a privilege in this country to be in this room and this privilege that you have to be able to afford this talk, to be able to afford the luxury and the privilege to be thinking about your wellness and your inner health and your Self-help your ida.

This is a [00:22:00] privilege, the same privilege that every single one of us in this room has, and for those of us who carry and live with that privilege to be able to buy a ticket or be gifted a ticket, or to be able to walk into a room like this, we are the miracle workers. We have to do the work.

It is our responsibility to show up. It's our responsibility to bring the light wherever we go. It is our responsibility. It's go time. We have no more time for being angry. We have no more time for petty arguments. We have no time for playing small. We have no time for living in the burden beliefs of our past. We have to do the self-help aura so that we can align with that self energy. Feel that courage, feel that clarity, feel that commitment, feel that love, the that energy that must move through us so that we can shake down the [00:23:00] dramas in this world.

Now it's on us, guys. It's on us. And I gotta tell you, you signed a sacred contract with the universe when you bought that Beto. Okay, you signed a sacred contract because you said, you know, I'm ready to go big in this lifetime. I'm ready to open my heart. I'm ready to see more, and I'm ready to give more love.

So the love that was coming through yesterday, the love is the answer. So ask yourself tonight, how can I bring more love? What can I do to be more love? And it's not about, yes, you know, go do the big things. Make the donation. Go volunteer. Yes, yes, yes. But it's the small moments that matter. It is looking someone in the eye.

It's holding someone's hand. It's making a real connection. It's sending a anonymous message to somebody and just letting them know. You know, I think you're really wonderful sliding into someone DM and being like, I love your art [00:24:00] love. So ask yourself right now, how can I bring more love? Where is that within me?

What is the possibility in me? You know, I live in New York City, and this is a similar here, but there's a lot of homeless people in my city, and I always gives people money. It's, it is what I do. And a lot of times people don't wanna take it. And I look them in the eye and I say a prayer for them. I pray for them.

We pray with them. And just connecting to humans, we're all suffering. Connecting to humans, giving love wherever you go, not just money. Love, connection, prayer, intention. It's go time. And that love that you bring will come back to you tenfold. I gotta tell you, I receive so much love in my life. I receive so much love in my life.

That's just from people who read my books. Just people, just strangers, just stranger on the street. Because you know what? I have fun. I [00:25:00] walk around, I bring joy. I am in an of amor. Okay? I bring it. And I bring it and I bring it, I bring it. I just have so much fun. I walk through life. I'm, I was in the airport yesterday coming back and there was these two people from my talk that were there and they're like, Gabby, Gabby, we manifested you.

And turned out the husband was psychic and he was like channeling all this stuff and we had a coffee and it was like literally I laughed and I was like mentoring him on his medium ship. And I was like, this is actually close your cloak and the whole thing. And now I have two friends in Guadalajara.

Okay. Okay. So I'm like making friends in Mexico, wherever I go. This is how life can be and we can live in the wonder and the synchronicities are wild, and we start to manifest more because we're connected.

And that's the love piece of this talk tonight. Guys, if you follow me on social media, you know that I am obsessed with my son. Yes, my husband, yes. And my cats, my two cats, Lily [00:26:00] and Jimmy Blue are everything to me. I'm obsessed with these girls. They literally bring so much joy into my life. In fact, Jimmy Blue saved my life. She came to me at such a difficult time, and I, I just care a lot about them.

They throw up a lot. They throw up a lot. That's the big thing. That's the issue. And I was super worried about their digestion and I know cats throw up, but it was making me a little nervous and that's when I started giving them smalls cat food. And it's this protein packed, preservative free, and that is just the best.

Cat food cats.com. Names Smalls the best overall cat food and my cat's. Favorites. Flavors are smooth fish. Jimmy Blue and Lily prefer it way more than other cat foods. They just like the taste. They just love it. They go for it. They're psyched about it. You have to keep it refrigerated sometimes because it's so fresh and you just can't feed your cats kibble.

You have to give your cats. Real food. They descend from ferocious desert cats who hunted live prey for food. And your cat isn't any different. They need fish, they need protein packed meals. They [00:27:00] need their food to be the best quality, and that's why I love smalls. So for limited time only. Now I bring you to faith. Listen, it's really easy to have faith when everything's kinda like working out and you're like, I. I did the 21 day manifesting challenge. I'm like, I'm getting my signs. You know, like that's, that's easy, right? It's like things are working out. You feel the flow of the universe.

You're getting it, you're getting your signs, you're manifesting with your friends, you're texting your manifestations, and you're going back and forth with your sisters and brothers. Okay, cool. That's great. We've got that. But where is the faith when the shit hits the fan? Sorry, Zane. Where is the faith when the shit hits the, when it hits the fan.

When it hits the fan. [00:31:00] You know what, when we get rocked, I'm, I'm sure many of you a month ago might have been really out of faith. Yes. Yes. But I wanna tell you a story that I haven't really shared before. Very much. Okay. It's a really personal story. It's a story that it took me a long time to be able to talk about, but in 2020, I was family planning.

I had, I had my child, Oliver, and it was COVID. He was two. I was like, okay, this is my moment. I'm 39 years old. At the time I had to go and do IVF to try to get whatever leftover eggs were in there. No. Okay. And I. So I had to do whatever it took to get them out and I, I really made it a really joyful experience because I didn't see anybody, there was no people I saw, but I was in Connecticut at the time and I was driving an hour back and forth to the fertility center.

So the only time I would see people was when I was driving. To the fertility center and it was masked up and I'd see the nurses and everybody, I knew everything about the nurses, like, how's your kids? What have you [00:32:00] been eating? What TikTok recipe did you make last week? Like literally, they were my best friends.

They were the only people I saw and I was having fun. I was writing my book Happy Days at the time, and I was listening to all these beautiful trauma recovery books and just really educating myself in the car. And I kept going round after round and each round I was not getting any viable eggs. Three, two, not a lot.

If anyone's been through this, you know, that's not a lot. And I was just going round after round, after round and I really kept the faith. I was like, if I have fun with this, if I have joy, my miracle is on the way. And I kept saying, all you need is one. All you need is one. All you need is one. After nine rounds of IVF gained 20, 30 pounds.

And it kind of, you know, you're in the cycle, you just don't, don't realize, and it was COVID, there was nothing else to do. So I kept just going back and going back and going back and my insurance covered it. So I was just going for more. And then finally I was on my ninth round and I got [00:33:00] one healthy egg.

And that egg made a healthy embryo. And I remember, I, I, I got this embryo and I got a call from the embryologist and I said, listen, can you do me a favor? We're waiting for the results of the, of the testing that we did on it. We said, I said, can you do me a favor? Can, can you pray for my, when you look at the embryo, can you pray with it my embryo and send it some love?

And then when I went to go do the transfer for, to put the embryo into my body, the embryologist, I was like literally in the startups and the embryologist like insisted on coming in to meet me. So I'm like, so they're like, like in the stirs and she comes back to me and she goes, Gabby. She's like, I read all your books.

She said, this is so unprofessional, but when I saw your name, I was like, it can't be Gabby Bernstein. It can't be Gabby Bernstein. But when you told me to pray on the embryo, I knew it was Gabby Bernstein.

And she sat there with me and I let her stay in the room and we played the song, hallelujah. And this thing that happens sometimes when you have a transfer, it's very, very [00:34:00] infrequent, but it can happen where it looks like a shooting star, where you see the embryo going into your uterus and it's ab.

Absolutely magical. And I was holding the hand of the nurse that had been helping me through all nine rounds and we cried and we saw that baby enter in and it was the hallelujah was playing and the embryologist was there. The doctor was like, what the fuck are you doing? And it was the most amazing moment, one of the most divinely God-given moments of my life.

And I found out a few weeks later I was pregnant. I was pregnant with a boy and I carried that boy for five and a half months. I carried that boy and I went for my 20 week scan, about a week and a half, two weeks late to go to that 20 week scan, and I sat in the room with my husband and I. The nurse looked at the scan and, and she's like, I gotta, I gotta go.

She walked out really quickly and we didn't think anything of it. And then a bunch [00:35:00] of different doctors started walking into the room, looking at the scan, looking at the scan, and one of the doctors said, oh, do you have any other embryos? And my husband said, all you need is one. And they told us the unfortunate truth.

My son, Owen, was not growing. He would not survive. And I would not survive if I did not have an abortion. I had two weeks left in New York State to to do that legally, and I walked outta that hospital and I was numb, checked out. My husband kept saying, all you need is one.

And I remember just being in the car with my husband and holding his hand, and I looked at him and I said, this is what I've been training for. This is what I've been [00:36:00] counseling women on for decades. This is what I've been offering. Hope, faith, love. No matter what, I wrote a book called The Universe Has Your Back.

This is my moment. This is what I've been training for. But I let myself go through all the ways of the trauma. I remember the day before my procedure, I said to my girlfriends, they're like, why aren't you crying more? What's going on? Why aren't you just losing it? And I was like, I have a protector part that is dissociated right now, and she's working real hard to keep me safe.

And I let her work as long as she needed to. And honestly, I haven't even know, I don't even know if I've fully grieved this story. I'm only now able to give it real voice, and I just lived this moment, but I kept saying, I know that my faith is holding me like a blanket. And it felt like that. It felt like all the faith and the energy and the spiritual connection and the self-help and the love and the commitment to a higher power of my own understanding kept being gifted back to me and gifted back to me and gifted back to me.

And I held me in that time and it continued [00:37:00] to carry me. And now, almost three years later, I can stand here with you and I can tell you very truthfully with all of my heart and all of my love, that while my angel baby is not in my life as a human, he is my. Spirit guide and he came to me. My son Owen came to me to teach me to never sweat the small stuff.

And so when I notice myself sweating the small stuff, I say, Owen and I give that to you tonight, say his mate, when you feel like you're sweating the small stuff, just say his name. And remember, just let that be your comeback. Now, that's his gift to you. Just say his name, thank you. And I also can stand here right now and say the universe had a plan far better than I did, because I want that spirit baby. And I want my one human baby, [00:38:00] Oliver.

I want that one boy because that's the bandwidth and that's the energy. And that's all the amur I wanna give right now. And honestly, I can say that with truth that the life I have chosen and the path that I have chosen and the commitment I have to you, that I wanna be able to give my son Oliver as much as I possibly can.

And it's a gift that I have. One. All you need is one.

So the universe isn't always gonna give you what you think you want, but it's always gonna give you what you need.

To borrow my faith tonight, hope, love, and faith, and trust me when I tell you that the more you commit to these principles, to these tools, to these practices, the more that faith becomes real and it holds you in [00:39:00] the fire. It holds you in the loss. It holds you in the diagnosis, it holds you in the divorce.

It holds you in the breakdown and that faith holds you. And you know that when these wounds show up, that it is the faith that brings the light to you. Faith is available to all of you, and it is a faith that comes through resilience. It comes through practice, it comes through commitment. It comes through two minutes a day of the four step check-in.

It comes through acts of love and random acts of kindness. It comes through spiritual connection. It comes through being in rooms like this. It comes when we open our heart. To live a faith guided life, a faith of your own understanding, not a religious faith. If you want it to be religious, great. If you want it to be spiritual, great.

It's a faith of your own understanding and you allow it to be your guide. You allow it to show you where to go and what to do, and you [00:40:00] allow it to give you the guided direction to know how to move through life's obstacles and come out new.
